Vegetarians Paradise - Bloomsbury
59 Marchmont Street, Russell Square, London WC1N 1AP
12-01-2008
This is a small Indian-Vegetarian restaurant located 1 min walk from Russell square underground station. I've been a few times and sadly it’s almost always empty which can leave a rather strange atmosphere but this does mean that the staff really pay attention to you and really value your custom.
They do a good lunchtime all you can eat buffet for £4 which is great value. I’m always sceptical of cheap buffets and trend not to eat in ones below £10 per head, but as it’s vegetarian there no worry about the suspicious meats that come with other cheap buffets.
Overall this really does give value for money, especially considering how cheap it is. Well worth a visit.
Marylebone Farmers' Market - Marylebone
Cramer Street Car Park, Marylebone, London W1U 4RR
12-01-2008
Marylebone Farmers Market is on of London’s biggest farmers markets which meets once a week on Sundays. I used to live 5minutes walk away and I’d get up and walk down every Sunday and eat breakfast there as well as buying produce to eat for the next week. As with all of the London Farmers Markets the produce is sourced from farms nearby London so the environmental impact is minimal and all of the retailers are small independent producers. There are usually about 40 stalls but if this isn’t enough than there are many more shops in the Marylebone area worth checking out especially La Fromagerie which is located on the north end of the car park.
Also watch out for the guy selling fresh onions from a bike!
club 49 - Soho
49 Greek Street, London W1D 4EG
12-01-2008
I've been roped into going to club 49 twice and have really hated the experience, in my opinion this is a really bad club. Entry is free when its empty going up to 10pounds max.
The drinks are really expensive around £6 is a starting price for drinks like single vodka and mixers which is a lot considering this isn’t a star studded or bankers venue of choice. The music is RNB which I quite like dancing to but this club offers this in a very false 'glam' style which makes it very trashy.
The club is actually very small consisting of a bar and a dance-floor and is often filled only with men (bad door policy) which creates quite a strange atmosphere.
If you're looking for rnb than better to head down to Leicester square - it will have better music, be cheaper, last later into the night and have a better crowd.
Southbank Centre - South Bank
Belvedere Road, Southwark, London SE1 8XX
12-01-2008
The Southbank Centre is a complex of venues based by the south end of Waterloo Bridge and houses the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Hayward art gallery making it a huge centre for the arts. They have recently completely redeveloped the whole site which is I think is a fantastic boost for the arts in London and helps to reinforce London as the culture centre of the world.
I have been loads of times and have always enjoyed myself, many of the UK's orchestras are resident there such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment - all of which I have seen. If orchestra is not you’re thing than there is loads of other music including loads of electronic acts and brilliant jazz players.
Obviously there is the Hayward gallery as well which itself is a stunning view, I haven’t been so much but it is the base of the Arts Council's National Touring Exhibitions programme and I’ve seen Leonardo da Vinci and Edvard Munch there.
Check out the website as there are always different events and festivals covering a wide range of mediums from classical music to readings to poetry.
There’s a cafe and a cd store and a few other things but these are a little overpriced in my opinion (oh well).
One of my highlights of London!
Fabric - Farringdon
77a Charterhouse Street, Finsbury, London EC1M 6HJ
12-01-2008
Fabric is one of the most spacious and popular nightclubs in London and is regarded as one of the best dance music venues in the world. It specialises in more progressive forms of dance music and is an antithesis of the Leicester square style clubs. It is only open on weekends; Friday’s boasting Drum n Bass and Saturdays House music and its variants.
I have always had a great time whenever I’ve been but be warned, this is a dance venue - not really a place to pull or sit down. There are 2 main rooms and a third smaller room so there’s loads of space. The clubs always packed as it really attracts the best Djs and the dance atmosphere is always pleasant going right through the night usually stopping at 5 or 6 am - perfect for the tube home!
Bad things are the sheer volume of the music, professional ear protection is best, and sometimes the drum n bass nights can get a bit testosterone filled.
If you like dancing than this is a must.
One final thought is that the club launched its own record label and now sells cds of many of the nights, equally brilliant if you were there or not.
La Fromagerie - Highbury
30 Highbury Park, Highbury, London N5 2AA
12-01-2008
This is one of the best cheese shops in London beaten only by the other shop by the same name and management located on Marylebone High Street!
The shop is laden with cheeses of all varieties and origins and is always a great experience for the cheese addict. The staff are really knowledgeable and are able to offer their expertise so even if you don’t know much (a bit like me) than you don’t have to feel embarrassed. Unlike the Marylebone store it isn’t packed at weekends; almost as if the local residents don’t know how good they have it.
If you can’t find it just follow your nose - you can smell it from about 20 metres away.
Duke Of York - Marylebone
45 Harrowby Street, Marylebone, London W1H 5HT
12-01-2008
The Duke of York is a brilliant pub located directly off Edgware road on a surprisingly quiet residential street. The pub is really quite tiny only comprising of one room - about the size of my living room. This shouldn’t put anybody off as this is one of my favourite pubs; outdoor seating is available and is great during summer. What makes this a really great pub is the food which is served all day; my personal fave is the sausage sandwich with gravy, really brilliant. To top it off the atmosphere is really friendly and intimate.
This is a really lovely pub- quiet and intimate, really worth a visit if you don’t know it.
the rocket - Bloomsbury
120 Euston Road, London NW1 2AL
12-01-2008
The Rocket is a sort of sports bar/pub located 2mins away from Kings Cross Stations. It is equipped with Sky on widescreens, an old style jukebox, 2 pool tables, fruit machines and quiz machines. There is extensive outdoor seating which is great in summer and meals are served during the day. The food inst really the great however and is only a small step above the Weathersoppns microwave-meals.
I'm not really into sports bars, I’d really prefer something different but....
... on Saturday nights it's £1 pint!
This makes it more worth it, there crowd is mainly young students in the evenings - probably as there are 3 university hall within 200 meters and this is the union bar for students at the Royal Vet nary College.
Cabbages and Frocks Market - Marylebone
St Marylebone Parish Church Grounds, London W1U 5JD
12-01-2008
Cabbages and Frocks is a brilliant market which meets on Saturday mornings at the north end of Marylebone high street. The branding and concept should be really appealing to anybody who shares a love of good food and shopping.
The food sellers offer great delights much similar to the quality and diversity wares available in borough market and food can be brought to eat straight way or to take home. Stalls selling clothes are hit-and-miss in my opinion; some stall offer great bespoke make clothes and accessories where as other really just offer tat.
Overall it's a great market with a fantastic vibe, however it is rather small.
Royal Academy Of Music - Marylebone
Marylebone Road, London NW1 5HT
12-01-2008
The Royal Academy of Music is one of the worlds leading performer training institutions and is located at the junction where Marylebone Road meets Marylebone High Street. For me this is one of the real hidden gems of London as the institution holds concerts almost every day without fail. Some of these are small and are really mock concerts wit a few audience members but every few weeks there are large concerts held in the Dukes Hall which is next-door. The concerts are of a world class standard almost on a par with the top London orchestras but best of all most of the concerts are FREE!!
