Imperial War Museum Duxford - Cambridge
Duxford Airfield, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB22 4QR

Put simply, if you like planes, you’ll adore this place. It’s got pretty much everything, from Second World War warbirds like the Spitfire and the Kittyhawk, right up to the modern day machines. They’ve even got a plane so big the hangar was built around it, it wouldn’t fit through the doors (the B-52 Stratofortress in the American Air Museum hangar). The American Air Museum also houses the only SR-71 Blackbird exhibited outside of the United States. They also have an example of the Bouncing Bomb, used in the Dambuster raids.
It doesn’t only do military planes, though. There’s a couple of commercial airliners there too, and even a space shuttle.
And even if planes aren’t your main interest, there’s still things for you to see, such as the land warfare museum (this is quite a walk from the main hangers, though. Take the tram if you can).
The gift shop can be a bit overpriced, but their variety is good. The catering (found in the American Air Museum) is also very good, but again, prices are a little high.
Woolworths - Holbeach
1 High Street, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE12 7DU
26-09-2008
This is one of the smaller Woolwrths stores, and as such their variety of stock isn’t excellent. I’ve only really been in there looking for computer games and the like, and their selection, to be honest, isn’t up to much. They do sell quite a few of the more recent games, but only if it’s well-hyped before the release. Their DVD selection is very good though (and often cheap, especially during sales), as is the choice of CDs.
The rest of the store is quite good, although they do tend to move stuff around a lot, so it’s hard to get used to where things are located.
The staff are generally polite and helpful, but they can be rushed sometimes (especially during school holidays and the like, when the store seems to be packed by kids).
The Rose and Crown - Spalding
Old Main Road, Fleet Hargate, Holbeach, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE12 8LU
24-09-2008
The Rose and Crown is a traditional pub (owned by Elgood’s brewery), with good meals available at competitive prices. If you’re looking for somewhere to go for a quiet drink, this is the kind of place you’ll be looking for. The drinks selection isn’t great, but what they do have is often of high quality. They have a small children’s play area/ beer garden at the back.
The Bull - Fleet Hargate
Old Main Road, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE12 8LZ
24-09-2008
The Bull is a nice, friendly pub, with an excellent atmosphere, a good selection of drinks of various types (at least 5 types of lager on tap, several bitters, stouts etc, and a very well stocked spirits shelf), and very good, competitively-priced, meals. They also have live bands performing there a few Saturday evenings a month.
However, if you’re not a fan of pool or darts, I’d avoid it on most week-nights, as there’s always matches taking place, and it’s very hard to get out of the way of them (especially with the pool matches, there are 2 tables in the main bar).
They do have rooms to rent, but I’ve never used them, so can’t really comment on them.
Waterstones - Llandudno
37 Victoria Centre, Mostyn Street, Llandudno, Wales LL30 2NG
22-09-2008
First of all, this place is huge. Walking in there is akin to visiting a library, with it’s wooden stacks and wide selection. While they do seem to specialise in the more well known authors and series of books, they’re also pretty quick to promote up-and-coming authors.
Price-wise they’re fairly average, but they often run promotions (such as 3-for-2 offers and the like) which is good if you’re looking for several books at the same time.
All-in-all, a good bookshop. But make sure you know what you’re looking for, because it’s possible to lose hours in there just looking around.
Carrow Road football stadium - Norwich
Carrow Road, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 1JE
22-09-2008
Carrow Road is the home of Norwich City football club.
It has a capacity of 26,034, which it often reaches, especially for the more popular matches, such as the East Anglian Derby against Ipswich Town. It is also used for international matches, notably for the England under-21s team.
Of the 4 stands, the Jarrold Stand is generally regarded as the best stand to be situated in, due to the presence of 3 large TV screens, showing highlights of all the match action. The Barclay End is where you want to be if you like loud fans, though.
The half-time entertainment leaves a bit to be desired if you don’t like distorted music through half-broken speakers (unless Delia breaks open the cooking sherry again, of course).
One good thing of note is the Holiday Inn Hotel, which is owned by the club and faces onto the pitch, allowing visitors who have a pitch-facing room to view the match from their window.
The stadium is also used for music concerts.
Tickets (for football matches, available by calling 08448 261902) vary in price, but will cost in the region of £15-£30, depending on where you want to be in the crowd, your age etc.
An additional cost you may want to pay is the £3 cost for the match program.
