Floods Bistro - Weymouth

19 Custom House Quay, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 8BG

17-03-2009

Floods is a great local resturant in Weymouth. The menu is all seafood with only one steak option and no vegetarian options so only go if you’re a seafood lover. If you are though you will love this place. Fantastic food, wondeful friendly service and possibly the best lobster in the world ever and all for less than £30 a head. Fantastic.

Song Que Cafe - Shoreditch

134b Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London E2 8DY

15-03-2009

Excellent cheap cafe right on Kingsland Road and not far from nice pubs in Hoxton and Columbia Road. The speciality of this cafe/restuarant is Vietnamese noodle soup - however veggies be warned the stock is beef stock even if you order tofu or vegetable versions. I stuck to stir fried veg with sticky rice which was fantastic. The jasmine tea we ordered to accompany was a nice refreshing alternative to wine (my friend assures me the wine is 'ropey’).

The service is a bit hit and miss - we found we were ignored for large chunks of time and then would be harrassed by staff (asking why I was a vegetarian..erm….none of your business?). Overall a fun busy atmospheric restaurant and cheap enough for a week night meal.

The Glades - Bromley

High Street, London BR1 1DN

15-03-2009

Remember shopping before you moved to London? A distict lack of tourists getting in your way with their slow walking confusion, no need to clutch your bag in fear of dodgy pickpockets on Oxford Street, no walking two miles when you realise you forgot to go to New Look, no nearly getting knocked over by Russian princesses with Gucci bags? Ahh those were the days. If you fancy missing out on all of that once more I would highly recommend The Glades in Bromley. It’s small enough to walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes but it has Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Zara, and big H&M. Outside on the high street there is the biggest Primark I have ever seen, Next, Topshop…everything you could need for a day out shopping with no tourists, no crowds, no sixteen branches of Boots none of which stock what you want to buy…you get my picture.

Bus from Lewisham takes about half an hour, shops are all pretty new and smart - surprising given the centre must be twenty years old. Negative points are there aren’t that many places to eat but we are talking about shopping here, other than that as an alternative to the frenetic rushing of town on a weekend, it’s perfect.

American Apparel - Covent Garden

26-28 Neal Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9QQ

15-03-2009

I’m slightly ashamed to say that this store is fast becoming one of my favourite in London. In my head I thought American Apparel was over prices, over hyped and basically a shop for neon legging wearing size 0 19 year olds. As i’m none of those things I have always pretty much avoided it.

I was led in there the other day by my current coloured tight obsession and since them have been back three times in less than a fortnight. The clothes can be overpriced and a good portion of the collection is aimed at size 0 19 year olds (gold leggings? Hotpants? football shorts?) anyway… but what there is in American Apparel if you look hard enough are some fantastic luxurious basics. Great hoodies, leggings (of the black not gold variety please), fab tights, lovely jersey scarves (i’m buying at a rate of one per visit currently) and some lush slouchy cardies.

I still hate the stupidly loud music (andI’m 28 not 80 but it is FAR TOO LOUD IM SHOPPING NOT DANCING!!) and the shocking service from miserable stuck up size 0 19 year olds…..but I’ll brave it because I love the jersey scarves…..

Cafe Pacifico - Covent Garden

5 Langley Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JA

15-03-2009

I like the idea of Cafe Pacifico, I’m just not sure I like the actual execution of it. The hype sells it as a mexican restaurant in the heart of covent graden - the kind of place you can go with lots of friends and have a really social experience with lots of cocktails and authentic mexican food.

When I went I found that the service is chronically slow (don’t go if you want to get food before 9pm), the drinks overpriced and sticky cocktails, and the food deep fried, deep fried and oh deep fried. What I hated even more was the open kitchen and the way it seemed to spew so much smoke into the restuarant that it was impossible to see to the other side of the table. Thank god I wasn’t going out afterwards because my hair stank of cooking meat.

I like the idea of these restaurants which provide a great atmosphere as well as good food, I just feel like in Cafe Pacifico I could do with a little less atmospere and some better food. I’m willing to give it another go but if I come out smelling of smoke again then that’s it!...

Wahaca - Covent Garden

66 Chandos Place, Charing Cross, London WC2N 4HG

15-03-2009

I’d been wanting to try this place for some time and recently got the chance to go with a friend. For some reason I had imagined this restaurant to be small - I think because I had heard it was canteen style with a street food menu - but Wahaca is HUGE. And a good job too..even at 4pm on a Friday it was busy and my friend said she hadn’t ever seen it without a queue. The food is Mexican but not as you will know it - don’t expect huge plates of cheesy deep fried nastiness here. There are some familiar entries on the menu such as nachos (which come with a guacamole or salsa), burritos and of course Mexican beers. I’d guarantee you will also find a few things you wouldn’t see on the menu of Chili’s or Chiquito’s like Cactus Salad, tortilla soup and green rice.

The format is pretty simple, there are two styles of eating - either mix and match from the street food and sides and share with your friends (like tapas), or go for a bigger plate like a burrito or a salad. We chose to pick and mix with the street food and chose some great dishes like the aforementioned cactus salad served on a crispy tortilla, and some great mushroom quesadillas. With beer and nachos and full to the brim the meal came to £40. A bargain for such good quality food in such a great environment. A real experience, highly recommended.

Andrew Hunter I agree. Decent mexican food. You should also try Chilango - It’s awesome.

Vaughans - Weymouth

7 Custom House Quay, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 8BE

15-03-2009

Vaughan’s is a pretty bistro restaurant situated in the Custom House Quay area of Weymouth. The setting is lovely with boats moored in the harbour and white buildings all along the street.

On entering the restaurant the first thing you notice is the lovely atmosphere - sparkling glassware, cosy candlelights and white tablecloths give a smart but relaxed air to the place.

The service was perfect when we went - the ladies who work here are friendly and keen to help.

The menu is mainly based around local seafood dishes such as Mussels with pesto,Thai Monkfish curry and Dover Sole. A meal for two with wine came to just over £40 -though you can also get a mid week dining offer of two courses for £15 and three for £18 which is a more limited menu but still looks great (I’m thinking the fish and chips for next time). We didn’t have room for dessert but the choices looked fantastic and had it not been a week night we could have happily whiled away the hours over coffee, cheese and spirits - Vaughan’s is that kind of place. 5 stars.

Enzo Ristorante - Weymouth

110 The Esplanade, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 7EA

15-03-2009

Enzo is a nice Italian restaurant in Weymouth situated on the sea front. The decor is pleasant and modern and the service is good. The food is average Italian restaurant fayre with pizzas and pastas featuring heavily on the menu. Disappointingly there wasn’t too many salads to choose from but there was some local seafood dishes which was nice to see for a restaurant in such a location. The food comes in large portions and is good, and with the bill coming to £80 for four people quite reasonable for a mid week dinner.

The Portland Spa Hotel - Southwell Business Park

Southwell Park, Portland, Dorset DT5 2NA

08-03-2009

The Portland Spa is quoted as being a 4 star hotel. I can tell you straight away the reason for this is the rooms. The decor is modern and rich, Tv’s are flat screen and beds are huge. Bathrooms are designer and towels are fluffy. That’s pretty much where the good stuff ends.

I wish I could be more complimentary but this hotel is like staying in a cross between 'The Shining’ and the mental hospital from 'Gothika’.
The building used to be a Naval base and the institutional air is still very much in evidence (and the smell of disinfectant - where do public buildings get that stuff from??).

To be more descriptive this hotel sits on a kind of complex (read 'looks like a prison from the outside’). This includes a restaurant which as been situated on the site for some time, a leisure centre with a gym, pool , conference facilities and spa facilities, a business centre and a hotel. The hotel has only recently opened and local taxi drivers have no clue where the entrance is - which is how we discovered the rather pleasant mze of corridors which make up the building. We were willing to forgive this experience until we realised this is actually where you are expected to walk on a daily basis.

To get to the restuarant (where breakfast is served) you have to walk down said institutional corridor which is deserted and frankly creepy.

The restaurant itself -well Gordon Ramsay would be having fits if this place cropped up on Kitchen Nightmares - ridiculously rich, over fiddled with mains, everything with a chive balanced on it and ’ vegetarian option available on request’ (i.e. we will root around in the fridge until we find some veg and cheese and call it a vegetable crumble - no joke -it was vile) it’s like being stuck in 1976 (don’t even start me on the room service menu). That’s not even mentioning the fact that they enforce you having a drink in the 'waiting area’ even though the restaurant is deserted - someone should tell them it’s not Claridges.

Breakfast isn’t much better - silver service at 7am (JUST GIVE ME MY COFFEE!!!!) is so unecessary, and it took about 15 minutes to get my order of toast to our table.

I’m sure part of the reason our stay was so disappointing was that this hotel is not set up at all for business travellers, and it was out of season. But business travellers can be the lifeblood of a place like this in the Winter months - something which the ownr of this hotel seems unaware of (broandband is wired on a 4 inch cable and is £6 an hour for example), they’re also relatively easy to please as they’re not spending their own money. However bad service (don’t even get me started on the guy at reception), silly restaurants, rubbish room service menu and costly wi-fi are instantly going to put these lucrative guests off.

Aside from all this the Portand Spa is miles from anywhere and just shy of £140 a night with meals costing £20 for two courses and breakfast costing an additional £10 each (so not worth it!). Oh and the gym doesn’t open until 7am.

Everyone feels differently about hotels - it depends what you’re looking for in many ways but for me…never again…just..never again.

Mallams At The Quay - Weymouth

5 Trinity Road, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 8TJ

08-03-2009

This restaurant is lovely. So far the best place I have been in Weymouth. The food is fantastic which lots of local seafood and a wonderful shellfish platter which I highly recommend as well as plenty of veggie options. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is good. Lots of lovely wine choices too. Really enjoyable experience.

The restaurant is situated (though it was very dark and raining the night I went) on a kind of inlet where there are lots of boats (parked? what is the word??). The setting is very picturesque and Mallams occupies a small buiding within this area. The decor as you enter is cosy, with plenty of flattering candelight and nautical references like rope and vintage artwork of the Weymouth area. We were ina large group but this restuarant would be fabulous for an inimate evening with close friends or a partner.

The menu is wonderful - one of those where you can’t decide what to choose and have to spend half an hour narrowing down. Starters varied from pate, smoked salmon, scallops to lovely mini crab cakes. Mains were gnocchi with gorgonzola and cream( I kept away from this but I SO wanted it), cod fillet with ciabatta crust, sea bass and one each of a lamb, beef and chicken option. Desserts were more interesting than amazing in my opinion - I had a passable Bailey’s cheesecake and a colleague had the mean looking cheese board both of which were OK but not up to the standard of the main courses.

Overall a lovely evening, I would definitely return.

(As this was a work event I can’t tell you the price but from the prices on the menu i’d say you may come away with a little bit of change from £100 for two people with water and wine)
