la fermette marbeuf - Triangle d’or

5 rue Marbeuf, métro Alma-Marceau, 75008 Paris

This is such a beautiful restaurant and seems fairly undiscovered by Brits, who might be put off by the slight feeling that only regulars are welcome in these elegant surroundings. It has the most wonderful art deco stained glass windows and there are two parts to the restaurant, with the nicest bit being the conservatory area at the back, so be sure to ask for a table there. I'd been taken to the restaurant before by a business associate but unfortunately couldn't remember the name so went across by metro earlier in the day, found it and booked for the same evening. My partner and I both had the fixed price menu which is certainly not the cheapest in Paris but still quite reasonable considering the quality and ambience. It included an 'amuse-bouche' plus 3 courses - I chose cream of asparagus, fish and chocolate pudding and everything was absolutely lovely. The only slightly sour note was that the wine waiter sneered at our choice in the way only the French can, but apart from that, highly recommended unless you are on a very tight budget.

The cleaners seems to have changed its name to Kings. Not that great. My two jackets came back clean but the dress still had a slight mark on the front that should have been very easy to remove. Also, the shop only takes cash - fine when you are just having one item cleaned, but several garments can amount to quite a lot. I had to go to another local shop and use a machine that charges to withdraw cash, which was irritating. I used this dry cleaners a lot in years gone by, but it has obviously changed hands. Needless to say, I won't be using them again. I think it is about time some of these companies dragged themselves into the 21st century.

Patpong Thai Restaurant - Chingford

Food is delicious - good range of red and green curry as well as less spicy choices, chicken and vegetarian dishes, noodle dishes, and tapioca balls (these have to be ordered in advance) and all seemed freshly prepared, hot and generous quantities. Service was pretty indifferent to begin with but got better during the meal. As the first of the group to arrive (only a few minutes ahead of schedule) I was told rather grudgingly that I could sit at the table and wait for the others but could not catch the waitresses eye to ask for a drink. I really think they could have offered. Conversely they didn't make a fuss when we delayed ordering food until the last person arrived somewhat later than planned. Clean, neat restaurant and reasonably priced.

Kyriad Hotel Paris Bercy Village - Bercy

19 Rue Baron Le Roy, 75012 Paris

Quel dommage!

Brasserie van Baerle - Museumkwartier

Van Baerlestraat 158, 1071 BG Amsterdam

As it looked such a smart, elegant place, I wondered where everyone was as we walked in, but then we spotted their great little courtyard garden. Couldn't have been a better choice, given the glorious sunshine. (Apparently you can't actually book a table in the garden, as Amsterdam's weather is about as reliable as London's).

The first promising sign is that the menu is quite short - none of those long pages of pre-frozen, reheated dishes , so you know everything is freshly prepared. Our veal ravioli starter was unusual and quite a delicate flavour. The 'catch of the day', cod, tasted delicious and the portion sizes are just right, leaving you room for dessert - we chose a crepe suzette and mixed cheeses. Pleasing to see a mature Dutch cheese included in the selection, which I really enjoyed. One rather nice touch is that the menu recommends a specific wine to go with each course.

Every dish is beautifully presented, the service is attentive without being overwhelming and price is reasonable.

Finally - another reliable indicator of a good establishment - individual laundered hand towels in the ladies room. Loved it.

I buy my sandwiches here most days. The staff are really friendly and always happy to chat, however busy they are. Reasonably priced, generous sandwich fillings and often a song... what more could you want?

Tolds & Snaps - København

Toldbodgade 2, 1253 København

This place has a great reputation for Danish open sandwiches, so I was delighted to be invited there. My hostess insisted I order two, but it was quite a struggle to eat everything. By this time, the herrings were starting to pall, as you get offered them absolutely everywhere, so I started with the Greenland shrimps, which were delicious and moved on to a sandwich that was a mixture of mature cheese and brandy. Wonderful taste, but far too rich to finish. Good welcome and friendly service, but after a while it got worryingly slow so rather a nail-biting dash to the airport afterwards. I'd definitely recommend this place, though. It's very authentic and clearly the locals all love it.

Cafe Wilder - København

Wildersgabe 56, 1408 København

We liked this so much for lunch, we almost went back for dinner too. Slightly off the beaten track in a residential part of Christianshaven but only a short walk from the Knippelsbro bridge. Good range of locally produced Danish foods - generous helpings of open sandwiches, salads, herring without the silly price tags you see outside some Copenhagen restaurants. Service was really friendly and the place was full of Danes - few tourists - so we knew it was a good choice.
