The Punch House - Ware

7 West Street, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 9EE

17-01-2012

My first visit to the Punch House was just before Christmas. It was warm, had a great ambience and the staff were friendly.

A good selection of beers was available, including some I’d never tried before, and myself and my two companions ordered some food.

All three of us were really pleased with the food when it came. It was a great price, hot and very tasty. My friend said that it was the best fish and chips he’d had in ages, and the size of the portion was vast. Great value. I had the Hunters Chicken which was really delicious too.

Not sure why I’d not been there before really. My only criticism is that it appeared to have a lot of people who were probably regulars, but I didn’t feel too unwelcome, just that slightly unnerving feeling when you first walk in and the dog playing the piano in the corner stops and you feel like you’re being watched! It only lasted a second though – almost that once they saw that you’d not ordered a Babycham you were OK by them!

Tap Bar - Ware

83 High Street, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 9AD

17-01-2012

Stupidly expensive for a cup of tea, and the staff appeared to be having a great conversation between themselves which I rudely interrupted by wanting to order a drink, and they made me feel it.

Also, how long can it take to make a cup of tea?

Awful.

Cafe Mode - Covent Garden

57 Endell Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9AJ

17-01-2012

I wasn’t that enamoured with Café Mode I’m afraid. I had a ‘Gourmet’ burger, and while the meat was ground well, it was flavourless, and the cheese and salad in the bun was a bit on the stingy side.

The chips were good, with a nice relish/ketchup accompaniment, but the onion rings were straight out of a frozen packet I reckon.

Prices were pretty steep for most things, and I’m not convinced the ‘bottled water’ wasn’t tap water in a bottle.

The service was terrible. We were there on a Friday night, and it was busy, but the staff couldn’t wait to get us finished and out of the door, we felt REALLY rushed.

Wouldn’t hurry back.

Sfizio - Ware

46-47 Church Street, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 9EW

30-11-2011

Went here recently for an Italian meal having never tried it out before. It’s off of the High Street, so you’d need to know it was there as you’re unlikely to stumble across it.

It was priced reasonably, but in certain areas that showed itself, like in the slightly café-esque paper napkins and cheap cutlery.

The food was good though, and the wine list not horrendous in cost and the bottle we chose was very nice.

Staff were really friendly, and we used a discount card which they let us keep to use again!

Would definitely go back again.

unitedprint Ltd. - Birmingham

4200 Waterside Centre, Solihull Parkway, Birmingham Business Park, Birmingham, West Midlands B37 7YN

United Print are hands down the best value printer on the internet. I use them for SO much work, all of varied types. They deliver on time, and as a reseller they’re perfect as they allow for consignments to have your own name and address as the sender!

The day I find someone cheaper and more reliable will be the day I eat all of the hats in my house!

Wonderfish - Ware

11 New Road, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 7BS

05-07-2010 (actualizado el 02-05-2011)

If you want a pedicure with a difference head over to Wonderfish (it's part of Tao Hydrotherapy, see my other review).

Essentially, you sit with your feet in a tank of water and fish (called Garra Rufa, originally from the springs in Turkey, apparently) nibble the dead skin from your feet!

Before anyone gets all scared and squeamish, the fish don't have any teeth, they rasp at your feet and release an enzyme that breaks the skin down, leaving your feet really smooth. This I learned from the staff! They're very knowledgeable and obviously really enjoy what they're doing, so any questions you have about the treatment can be answered. They also make you feel very relaxed which is good when you're going to try something new like this.

And it is new. At the time of writing they tell me they're the only place in Hertfordshire to offer the treatment like this.

I was pleased to find out that here you sit with your feet in an individual tank of water, you don't have to share with anyone else, the water passes through a four stage filtration process and there is a UV light that sterilises the water to kill any nasties. I have to say too, that it looked it, the water was really clear and clean.

They have 4 tanks, and there were a couple of other people in at the same time as me and we all had a laugh so I can imagine it would be a pretty fun thing to do if there were few of you. Pre-hen night or something maybe?

Now, as a bloke, I was a bit dubious at first, but I can see the merits. Like many blokes, I don't take care of my feet, they're for walking on and not much else, so to have a treatment like this where you can just go and sit, have a cuppa and read the paper it's a great lazy way to look after them!

The feeling isn't what I thought it would be either. It's not that tickly, and certainly not painful. You need to experience it first hand (or foot!) really. I really did notice a difference after the first time I went too, so will definitely be going back.

For the girls a different way of having a pedicure will probably be the draw. Apparently, it's a great treatment for Psoriasis and some other skin complaints too so could be worth trying if you suffer from them.

Oh, and sometimes the fish are nicknamed Doctor Fish, so if you've heard about them these are the same things, so you can go along knowing you're getting what you've probably seen on TV recently!

I really recommend it. Great treatment in great surroundings, great value and with friendly and knowledgeable staff to boot who really do seem to care about you - a rare commodity these days.

AbFab Is this the place where Victoria and David Beckham go to have the fish pedicures? I heard they go to a place in Ware?

Tao Hydrotherapy - Ware

11 New Road, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 7BS

15-10-2009 (actualizado el 02-05-2011)

Colon Hydrotherapy - that's what you get here, and you get it in style! For those who don't know what it is, it's also known as Colonic Irrigation. Forget what you think you know about it though, as this is NOT a Matron with a big pipe!

The building is discreet enough if you're worried about people knowing where you've been. Trust me though, once you've had a session here you'll want to tell everyone about it and any thoughts of embarrassment will be, erm, washed away!

The therapist I saw put me completely at ease, explained the whole process and was very down to earth. I think being relaxed probably helps with this sort of thing and she certainly did that. The ambience of the room went a long way to relaxing me too - it's neutral decor meant I didn't feel too out of place, and they've finished it really nicely, a solid oak pedestal with a stone basin was an indicator that there has been some money spent getting the clinic to look the part. A cool pebble effect floor and other trinkets completed the feel.

My reason for going was general wellbeing, but from chatting with the therapist, and the detailed consultation form you fill in, it seems that this treatment can actually help with a lot of health issues, and is billed as a workout for your colon! It did that, and even though I felt a bit tired afterwards I felt a lot lighter!

I was a little concerned about my dignity, but needn't have been - the tube (I call it a tube, but it's no bigger than a pencil, and quite smooth!) is almost wriggled onto, by yourself, and this is while the therapist is out of the room. When it's in, you cover yourself with a towel and press a doorbell. The therapist came back in and the treatment started. I won't go into detail here as everyone will experience their own treatment, but it was so much more relaxing than I thought it would be, and I can't wait to have my next one!

After the treatment you get a choice of drinks such as fruit juice or a smoothie and a warm goodbye.

It's something I've been meaning to do for ages, so when Tao opened in Hertfordshire I thought, why not, and am very glad I did. The whole attitude and presentation of Tao was fantastic, and I can really see them bringing the treatment out of the slightly taboo to the masses like me, who want to detox and just feel a bit healthier all round!

Waga Mama - Brighton

30 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ

20-07-2010

I love wagamama! It had been a long time since I'd been in one but my return to the brand (albeit in a different location) was a good one.

They sell a delicious range of freshly cooked dishes, truly with something for everyone. The surroundings are good and this restaurant was clean and modern. The staff were all friendly and attentive, and the prices are very reasonable given the size of the dishes that you get.

The menu is split out in a very easy to read format, so you can quickly decide what kind of thing you want to order, and if there are a few of you (as there were when I visited) the side dishes come in good sizes to share.

Freshly squeezed juices, along with a good variety of other drinks, complement the food perfectly.

My only complaint was that the booth we sat in was a little on the narrow side, so it was tricky making sure you didn't elbow the person next to you with your chopstick arm! The large long benches elsewhere in the restaurant though would afford more room at quieter times but at the sacrifice of privacy.

Heartily recommended for healthy, inexpensive, quick food.

Stanstead Abbotts & St.Margarets Village Club - Stanstead Abbotts

4-6 High Street, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 8AB

05-07-2010

I've only ever been here once as a guest, and that was to watch football, play snooker and drink cheap beer. For all of the above, this is the perfect place!

The drinks are very cheap indeed, but don't go expecting salubrious surroundings, this is what a proper village club should be, down to earth and social!

They have the odd event on, including an annual beer festival, and I think it's available to hire for private parties.

There are two distinct areas of the club too, so you can sit and do the bingo with the olds or watch the footy and play snooker with the boys.

George IV - Great Amwell

St John's Ln, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 9SW

05-07-2010

What a lovely pub. Great Amwell is a fairly 'exclusive' village, and this pub positions itself appropriately, at least with regard to food. They offer some unusual but tasty meals which can all be served on the suntrap courtyard garden too. Inside it's still a pub pub, with carpet and a dark wood bar.

It's not the cheapest, but the quality of the food mirrors what you pay. There are a few nice walks to / from the pub as well, so it's the perfect place to stop if you're having a wander around the locality. Parking can be a bit of a pain so I'd advise walking up to it if at all possible.

Perfect on a summers day.
