Daunt Books - Holland Park

I went here for the book launch of Catherine Hall's 'The Proof of Love'. Aside the books selling out in just under an hour this is a very fine bookshop. If you find yourself in the area do pop in, there is always something interesting to be found in here, staff are friendly and the selection of books is fantastic.

I have been once or twice but have fallen in love with this ace the second time around. The spaces and work to be found in there are always interesting.
I like the fact that it's free and takes the edge off finding yourself in Chelsea.

I had a sausage and chips in here with my Ma and it was rather pleasant. Fish looked good too but I felt like having a true regression meal of sausage, chips and a coke.
We also ordered some curry sauce. Being a northerner by blood I do like my curry sauce, but my goodness this was awful. Chip shop curry sauce is meant to be tacky but the only places who seem to get it right are Chinese fish and chip shops.
Still everything else we had was lovely. Service friendly and I did like that people were dressed in a retro way. For this area it's nice to have a proper chippy that gives you massive portions and a good healthy dose of nostalgia in every bite.
But in a southern way. They can't get the curry sauce right.
sarahdrinkwater Ahh POUTINE!! I might have had a few shandies too many at last night's Qype event and a big plate of poutine would work wonders right about now...

Strada - Islington
105-106 Upper Street, Islington, London N1 1QN
10-05-2011
I seem to be eating Italian more than any other cuisine at the moment!
Strada is a place that I used to avoid. I wasn't that amazed by it's offerings, found the menu to be dull and would have the odd pizza usually purchased with one of those 2 for 1 vouchers.
But recently when stuck with no where else that was open and hunger that was making me feel faint I went to the Strada on the Southbank and ate my words as I practically licked the plate clean.
Again on a lovely Friday evening, my beloved and I took a long walk from Camden into Angel and found ourselves feeling hungry and walked past Strada Islington. It looked great as had great outdoor seating space as well as having the doors open so you could eat indoors but enjoy some elements of alfresco dining.
It is Upper St and not some beautiful hilltop in Tuscany after all. Even if eating Italian in Islington is a faux homage that people like to create in their minds.
We shared some pizza bread with capers and tomatoes (they were kind enough to omit the anchovies) and then we shared a scallop and pea risotto with a chicken salad.
It was really nicely done. Everything was cooked well, was pleasant to eat and was nicely presented. Menu prices weren't shocking or felt like they were trying to bankrupt us and the staff were really friendly and left us alone to a vast degree which was great.
We shared a Tiramisu just to break with the tradition of eating Panna Cotta and again it was very simple but very nicely done. No one does Tiramisu like a Sicillian friend of mine but unfortunately she isn't available to whip a tray out whenever we want. Believe you me we have tried but failed and like Santa her Tiramisu only comes once a year if you've been very good.
On a Friday evening when I eat a meal I don't like feeling like I am being processed or have the impression that I am being rushed. Friday is the start of the weekend and I like to do so in as relaxing or pleasurable way as possible. It's also good when eating out that you are not being interrupted every 5 seconds, especially if waiting staff have been primed to go on the up sell for absolutely everything.
As an aside that continual up selling that some restaurants like to do really irritates me beyond measure.
But this Strada doesn't do any of that. If you need anything the staff are attentive but they did seem to be able to read the tables well. It was busy but not unbearable and every table was well spaced so none of us felt like sardines trapped in a can.
I would recommend this for a place to go to if you haven't made reservations and fancy something chilled.
Trullo - Highbury
300-302 St Paul's Road, London N1 2LH
09-05-2011
Trullo frustrates me on many levels.
It's expensive for what it is and I thought their bread basket was atrocious. OK quality bread but three limp slabs of floury bread with what seemed like a tiny crucible of olive oil. In thinking this was an Italian restaurant a bit of generosity with oil wouldn't go amiss.
It felt like it was a portion that was given to you straight from the restaurant's accountant. Each mouthful you take will eventually balance out the red values on that spreadsheet and lace them back in the black.
The menu was quite diverse but the prices were quite a spank on the pocket. But the food we ate was very good.
To start we had the insulting bread and recession sized drop of olive oil. Then we shared a pasta dish of cream, sorrel and smoked eel. Now that was a plate of pasta to remember. Every ingredient complimented each other and offered a subtle smoky, sweet and tangy flavour. The pasta was fresh and was very moorish. We nearly had another plate but then we decided to wait until our mains.
My beloved had some bulgur wheat which had peas and asparagus and in some ways was like a lighter Spring version of risotto. Very nice delicate flavours and wasn't too much. I had some lamb that was slowcooked with garlic and served with peas and mint. It was lovely yet had a posh canteen like feel about how it was served.
We opted for a panna cotta for dessert and although smaller and firmer the caramel flavour was beautiful. This was just like having Italian Creme Caramel.
The bill came and it wasn't overly cheap. Just like the rest of the area really. But the thing I found is that there are restaurants that are shining and I feel Trullo is slightly mediocre in comparison. It had great elements but it was just how the whole experience married with each other - there was something that didn't quite gel.
I also think I have Zucca partly to blame as once you eat there it sets a very high benchmark.
Trullo does Italian in an entirely different way. Trullo is Italian by English people, Zucca is Italian by Italians.
Zucca - Bermondsey
184 Bermondsey Street, Southwark, London SE1 3TQ

It has been a little while in which I can honestly say I ate somewhere and was really really impressed. Like really impressed to the point that I still have wet dreams about the bread they offered as we read the menu, or the wines they suggested and the panna cotta that was the size of my hand.
Zucca was all of these things. I have been twice. First in February and secondly on the night of the Royal Wedding. I wanted to be sure about it before I wrote a review.
I totally echo what the Grumblinggourmet has said about this place as wel as everyone else.
But my own feelings are that Zucca is somewhere that is a new and valuble asset in London's culinary crown jewels.
Just imagine a place that offers 3 types of home made bread witha generous size dish of exquisite olive oil, then starters that are as low as £4! Pasta that is freshly made and created with flavour and love in each mouthful as well as everything being in season.
This place knocks the spots off 80% of the Italian restaurants found in London and again manages to make beautiful food without leaving you bankrupt. The most expensive main is around £15...by and large. Even if it was £20 for a main it would be money well spent.
The staff are friendly and nearly seducing when telling you about daily specials, they smile and speak with such enthusiasm and passion. The smells that greet you on arrival leave you loosening your belt before you are seated at your table.
I will forever be indebted to this place for having a menu so wonderful that my beloved ordered pasta with ragu here. This is a huge thing as since we have been together she has been telling me how any type of minced meat she won't eat but Zucca seduced her and now she see's what I was talking about! Done right, ragu is stupendous and a culinary hug from a surrogate Italian Mama.
On my last visit we shared some prawns, some zucca fritti, bufala mozarella, spinach and lentils and some pasta with ragu. It was heaven and more. We shared a panna cotta which was so big it would have given Pamela Anderson a run for her money. It was vanilla, creamy joy that made you want to lick the plate clean and beg for more.
A good dessert should make you beg and want to forget the calories that are going to take the next 3 weeks to shift.
The tables here book up fast so whenever there is an opening, go! You won't be disappointed and you will want to come again and again.
San Francisco International Airport - San Francisco

I love this airport. I have also shed a lot of tears in this airport from not wanting to leave.
In terms of arriving, SFO is fantastic as the customs queue isn't as outrageous as the ones that happen in all of the New York ones. The TSA people here are a bit friendlier too.
When checking in here, I have never experienced very long waits and found the staff have been very friendly and helpful.
The food here is reasonably priced too and very, very good. I would recommend a quick trip to the Japanese restaurant before your flight, especially if you are flying with United airlines...as their food is beyond bad.
Internationaler Flughafen Genf - Genève
Route de l'Aéroport 21, 1218 Genève

I fly frequently to this airport and it is very hit and miss as to how it can be experienced.
Checking in baggage (which I do regularly) always seems to go to pot as the Easyjet stand still hasn't quite found a quicker way of letting people just drop and go.
Then there is the security check which sometimes they decide to just have one section open rather than all 3, which is just the thing you want when you only have 45 mins to make your flight because you were stuck in the easyjet queue for nearly 40 mins.
I also find the prices of the food in this airport absolutely outrageous. To buy a drink and a simple sandwich it comes to just under a tenner. Rip off doesn't even start to cut it.
Switzerland is an expensive place, but the airport really does take the mickey sometimes. The links to trains though are excellent and the trains are always reliable and come on time. But again they aren't cheap.
ATHENS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT "EL. VENIZELOS" SA - Atenas

This is an airport I really liked.
It was very simple and straightforward to navigate out of when we were leaving to get into the city, but it was also a great place to wait for our flight too. I especially liked the salad bar in the terminal, as it was nice to have a healthier option for food and it was really good too.
There are plenty of shops to keep you occupied too and they had good signs too.
