Rich Mix - Bethnal Green

35-47 Bethnal Green Road, Bethanl Green, London E1 6LA

30-06-2008 (actualizado el 12-03-2009)

Thursday Night Life is a monthly collaboration between the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation and Black Film Maker (BFM), which so far has been going off with a bang each time the event has taken place! For the last two screening events which previewed the films 'Adulthood’ and 'I love my wife’, alongside musical showcases, Q&As with the actors / directors of the films, food and drink sold out even before the night of the events.
Thursday Night Live creates an interesting social and networking forum for those who want a little bit more than a film and less than a club event. Performances from Bashy as part of the Adulthood sound track went down a storm and lively debate ensued with the Q&A in the bar after the film.
Rich Mix serves a good selection of snacks, food and drink including jerk chicken and patties. The jerk was quite hot, mind you…even for me. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out for Thursday Night Live.

Albert Kennedy Trust - Londres

Unit 305a Hatton Square, 16 Baldwins Gardens, London EC1N 7RJ

08-08-2008

Last week Sunday 3rd August 2008 from 7pm until midnight, the Albert Kennedy Trust held a punk rock benefit gig at rampART (http://therampart.wordpress.com). The purpose of the event was to raise money for homeless LGBT Youth. It featured: The Restarts and SBWL from London, the Pogo from the USA and 'Comply or DIe' from Yorkshire.

Somebackground info about the Albert Kennedy Trust:
In 1989, 16 year old Albert Kennedy fell to his death from the top of a car park in Manchester whilst trying to escape a car load of queerbashers. Albert was a runaway from a children’s home in Salford and was depressed. His short tragic life had been filled with rejection and abuse from society. For some young people, they find themselves rejected by family and peers when they ‘come out’, and often social services and homeless organisations fail to meet the needs of these youth at this vulnerable time!
The Albert Kennedy Trust’s mission is: To ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people are able to live in accepting, supportive and caring homes, by providing a range of services to meet the individual needs of those who would otherwise be homeless or living in a hostile environment.

So keep up to speed in regards to their events, as this is a worthwhile cause.

The gig started at 3.45pm and ended when the last folks trampled home, stoned out of their minds. Dance and trance music wafted through the air until the early hours (with the bring your own bottle benefit). Grass Roots Festival - Peterborough

The Glass Onion 2 Burghley Road, Cambridgshire, Peterborough PE1 2QB

08-08-2008

Things are looking very promising for this years festy, with plans to make GrassRoots 2008 as good as and better than 2006. There are loads of surprises planned, musically as well as artistically, and not forgetting the randomness and pleasantness of being in a field with all your best friends… some of whom you haven’t even met yet.

Stages include the Circuit Tree (Arising like a phoenix from the ashes of change, a new concept for the future of sound will be unleashed in the form of the electronic stage named the CIRCUIT TREE); The Drawing Room (To provide a fully equipped, interactive environment in which people can make music…); The Freedom Stage (The Freedom Stage will present a diverse line-up of live bands - a place for freedom of expression and speech where perceived boundaries relating to genres, scenes, demographics, social backgrounds and class can dissolve leaving nothing but a collective smile experiencing pure humanity); Poetry and Comedy; Grasshopper Kids Area; Breathe Easy; Irie Stylie Solar Stage and 'Playpen Dance Tent’.

The NO:ID gallery will be present with exhibition, workshops, and performances, in their own space.

Reflections in Time and Place - Stoke Newington

SCHWARTZ GALLERY, 92 White Post Lane, London E9 5EN

08-08-2008

Schwartz Gallery returns with the second installment of Flux – transgressions in time and place, its very successful opening show, in a very exciting and larger space directly next to the space where the first show was held. The space for the first show has since been partitioned into live-work studios.

Shift - reflections in time and place uses this migration and reconstitution of spatial relationships to extend the ideas worked through in the first show. Imminent change and endings are supplanted with reflections, echoes and new beginnings. Physical and imagined places, temporal divisions, traces and memories are again traversed and interpreted through contemporary fine art practice. This second installment brings together five artists from the first show with six new artists creating a further layer and dialogue between what has already taken place and what is now being created

Artists: Simon Atkinson, Gabriel Birch, Panayiotis Delilabros, Ismail Erbil, Sumer Erek, Kit Merritt, Patrick Michalopoulos, Samantha Mogelonsky, Paula Naughton and Mary Yacoob.

Iceberg Obelisk - Leyton

Whitechapel Gallery Angel Alley Entrance, 80 - 82 Whitechapel High Street, London E1 7QX

08-08-2008

On Friday 13th June 2008, the Elevator Gallery held a night of out-there music/film/performance plus 2D and 3D art featuring visual curation by the East End’s rising stars, Elevator Gallery, plus live performances from Charles Hayward of This Heat, Blood Stereo and Bolide Awkwardstra. Media partnership project with The Wire magazine A night of out-there music/film/performance plus 2D and 3D art featuring visual curation by the East End’s rising stars, Elevator Gallery, fresh from recent Arnolfini shows. Among the extensive list of participants there were screenings from Heidi Kilpelainen and Matt Lippiatt in the auditorium, performance from Phoebe Davies and large inflatable work by Jeni Snell throughout the gallery. Live performances from Charles Hayward of This Heat, Chris Corsano and Sonic Youth collaborators Blood Stereo, plus astral jazz trance from Bolide Awkwardstra. Info about the musicians who performed:

Charles Hayward - Best known as a founder member of the radically inventive This Heat, the UK group widely regarded as the missing link between Kraut-Rock and Post-Punk. The group continue to inspire generations of intrepid of musical explorers, heavily influencing the output of groups like Sonic Youth and Liars and anticipating a wealth of musical genres that would not surface for decades after their fragmentation. Moving forward with collaborations with Roxy Music’s Phil Manzenera, Soft Machine’s Robert Wyatt, improv guru Lol Coxhill and a host of others, at the Whitechapel Charles Hayward delivered a solo performance on drums, electronics and vocals.

Blood Stereo - The siamese mind meld of Prick Decay/Decayer Pinga members Karen Constance (Polly Shang Quan Band), Dylan Nyoukis (Chocolate Monk Records head honcho) and an ever evolving additional cast. As established noise fetishists the duo has collaborated with the likes of Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh plus Lee Renaldo and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth to name but a handful. Incantations ground from broken violins, fractured tape loops and intuitive vocal discoveries were just the beginning of the listeners’ journey
