Petiscaria Ideal - Lisboa

Rua da Esperança 100/102, Santos & Alcântara, 1200-658 Lisboa

This is a tapas style restaurant portuguese style and what can I say except that it is pretty awesome.
When you enter you are faced with two long tables and a smaller one seating about ten to the far end of the room which is where we placed ourselves. I would imagine you would have to get here early if you are large group as you sit where there is space available. As we were there mid week and seated before 20:00 we had a good choice of seats.
We ordered six dishes between three of us. I would say 2-3 per person is adequate but we’d eaten a snack a couple hours before so 6 was more than enough fo us to handle. The crab cakes were well flavoured and held together after the first bite. The seared tuna was melt in the mouth – absolutely superb, as was the octopus stew and the sweet potato dish. Using only seasonal ingredients this is a great way to try Portuguese food at its best.
This was all washed down with a refreshing ice cold jug of apple sangria.
English speaking staff who took time to explain and recommend dishes.
The decor is authentically Portuguese.
Expect to pay around 20-25 euro per head depending on what you order.
No reservations taken and cash payments only.
Highly recommended.

Cafetaria Doce Real - Lisboa

Rua D. Pedro V 121, Lisboa

Lovely sweet and savoury pastries. They sell the traditional ‘Pastel de Nata’ portuguese tarts here (even mini versions for 90 cents a piece).
Great place to grab something on the go, and lovely staff.
Limited English seemed to be spoken here so learn a couple of Portuguese phrases.

Hotel Botânico - Lisboa

Rua da Mãe d'Água 16, 1250-156 Lisboa

Well located hotel in Lisbon, which I wouldn’t hesitate staying at again.
We paid less than £60 a night for a triple room in late May 2011. Clean rooms, english speaking channels and big bathroom. We were lucky to have a corner room so lots of natural light.
Didn’t pay extra for breakfast, but if you turn right out of the hotel and walk up the stairs there is a really cute corner patisserie called Doce Real (address: Rua D. Pedro V 121) which served these savoury pastries called ‘Merenda’, basically a brioche type roll filled with cheese and ham – lovely eaten warm.
A taxi to the airport was also inexpensive at less than 13 euros + tip from the hotel.

We were here celebrating my brother’s belated birthday. We were given a table by the window which offered a fantastic view over downtown Lisbon.
This is fine dining Portuguese style, and although priced some might say a little high by Lisbon standards, was particularly reasonable if you opted for the lunch menu which offered limited courses but excellent value.
Only one of our party of three chose from the daily lunch menu in the end, as the a la carte offered a broader range of dishes. The traditional dish of ‘Porco Alentejo’ (pork and clam) main with rice was as I was expecting, (but secretly hoping it wouldn’t be), over salted. The seabass main could not be faulted.
Dessert of chocolate tart and raspberries probably should have come with a warning that it was scalding hot still, as my brother was to find out when he inevitably scalded his mouth, but was quickly soothed by the sweet raspberries.
Overall the view just slightly pips the food to the post on this occasion, but one thing to note is that when they bring the extra items to the table if it includes the cheese with the pnk peppercorns and honey then you just have to try it. It was the most memorable thing that I ate in Lisbon, and is included in the ‘couvert’ that appears on your bill. Totally blew my tastebuds.
The staff speak perfect English.

Mediterranea Restaurant & Pizzeria - Crystal Palace

21 Westow Street, Crystal Palace, London SE19 3RY

A seriously good Sardinian restaurant.
The charcoal grilled marinated Calamari on mixed leaves salad & red peppers sauce to start was cooked to perfection. The main of Pasticcio (baked layers of grilled chicken fillets, vegetables, tomato & cheese sauce) was so filling that I unfortunately couldn’t ift in dessert, whilst my partner’s pasta dish with crab meat, garlic, chilli and coriander deserves to be shouted from the rooftops. Extremely light pasta with an equally light sauce to match.
Honest home made sardinian food with reasonable prices to match.

Michael Mina - Las Vegas

Las Vegas Boulevard South 3600, NV 89109 Las Vegas

Michael Mina is located in the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens of the Bellagio hotel (adjacent to Café Bellagio).
We were there celebrating a special occasion having informed the staff of it on booking. Very impressed that all of the staff we spoke to acknowledged this and went out of their way to ensure that our night was a really special one.
The banana tarte tatin was simple but breathtakingly amazing. The sweet caramelized banana complemented the crispy disk of pastry underneath perfectly, whilst the wild strawberry cheesecake was light as anything.
The complimentary mulled apple cider with crispy shortbread cookie nearly tipped me into a food coma, but if it did, it was warming to know that I would be in safe hands with the exemplary staff working that night.
Thank you for making our visit so memorable.

I wasn’t expecting too much aftter reading the various mixed reviews about this place. I came with an open mind in any case and wish I could’ve rated it higher, but in all honesty the food although very good quality was, well, a bit boring particularly given the apparent status of the restaurant.
The miniature cheese choux pastries were very nice, but the starters were not tantalisingly explosive in any way, a bt of a dud if I’m completely honest and then the mains were quite underwhelming. I had a white fish dish and although a broad range of flavours and textures showed off the talents of the chef, it didn’t demonstrate a level of inventiveness or special quality in making that dish anything other than just adequate.
I was particularly looking forward to the dessert course but again it undelivered. In terms of food, perhaps the only savng grace was the extensive array of petit fours that accompanied our coffees. A nice selection of macarons, chocolates and toffee, and because we couldn’t eat them all, they doggy bagged it up for us to take home.
Lovely friendly staff however, but I can honestly say I won’t be back.

Pomze - París

109 Boulevard Haussmann, 75008 Paris

This is a really great find. All the dishes here try to incorporate some element of apple in its recipe hence its name.
They offer a huge range of salads at lunchtime served in humungous steel bowls. For 17 euros you can choose a salad and a drink (cider or apple juice). They offer 6 pure apple juices too. The one I tasted was the perfect balance of tart and sweetness.
A wonderful change after days of rich French meals.
The only slight negative was that it was pretty stuffy in the downstairs dining area.

MADD - Soho

53 Rupert Street, London W1D 7PH

03-12-2011

I discovered MADD after buying one of those voucher deals. What excellent value it turned out to be. One Mango madness dessert, two herbal teas, a mango mousse, chocolate tart and three cupcakes to take away for £10 (£25 value).
The Mango madness combo absolutely hit the spot. The creaminess of the panna cotta and mango pudding together with the chewiness of the sticky rice and the varied bitesize fruit made a winning combination.
Really cosy inside with plenty of seating, and some pretty awesome staff too.
Well done guys – you’re doing a great job.

Pois, Café - Sé

Rua de Sao Joao da Praca 95, 1100 521 Lisboa

Wonderful space and atmosphere can be found here.
The soup I tried (can’t quite remember what flavour it was), was under seasoned, but I suppose better that you can add your own seasoning. The sandwich was ok but not overwhelmingly different from what you could make yourself or find at a supermarket.
Nice staff though and free wifi too.
