National Trust for Scotland: Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve - Moffat

National Trust for Scotland: Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve, Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway DG10 9DP

28-09-2008 (actualizado el 16-04-2009)

The Grey Mare’s Tail is a magnificent waterfall which is about 300 feet in length. This makes for a stunning sight and a wonderful noise. Situated on the A708 between Moffat and Selkirk, this is a lovely beauty spot either to stop for a bit of fresh air or to go for a walk.

The whole area around these falls belongs to the National Trust for Scotland and is full of lovely flowers, wildlife and sheep! There are also wild goats higher up which, along with teh views, make it worth a climb. However, I would say you need to be of relative fitness and have a head for heights because it is by no means an easy climb. Having said that, it is not overly difficult, just a bit tricky as spots.

There is a car park at the bottom of the Grey Mare’s Tail and a few information boards which give information on what is nearby. It is quite remote though so remember you might not get a phone signal and don’t go climbing there yourself.

The whole road from Moffat to Selkirk is stunning and well worth a drive. Nearby St Mary’s Loch is another beauty spot which is worth a stop. Plus it has a small cafe which provides a welcome cup of coffee on this stunning but remote drive.

I have driven around this area many times so will upload a few photos for you to get an idea.

Worth a visit but only if you are in to the countryside.

T J Hughes - Dumfries

179-185 High St, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway DG1 2QT

22-11-2008

T J Hughes is basically a department store. It sells everything from clothes to cookware to bedding to small furnishings to electricals etc etc. The store is large and occupies two levels. It also has a cafe, which I have not visited but looks ok for a quick coffee - pretty basic though.

I always find this store a little cluttered and it can be a bit daunting finding something specific. However, they sell such a wide range of goods that it is worth persevering. If you have time and a car I would suggest Dunhelm Mill is a better alternative but that isn’t to say this place should be overlooked.

In the centre of town so handy, tons of stock and the prices are reasonable. Staff won’t win any customer service prizes but they’re nice enough.

Strands - Dumfries

33 Great King Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway DG1 1BD

20-11-2008

This is a lovely little shop selling gift items. The change their stock all the time but always have jewellery, ornaments, craft items. I have bought a good few things from here now and have always been impressed. The items are always good quality and quite reasonably priced in comparison to similar stores. The couple that run the shop are lovely too - will do anything to help. Perfect place to go if you are looking for a pressie and want something a bit different.

Globe Inn - Dumfries

56 High Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway DG1 2JA

18-11-2008

quality pub, very traditional.

this is where robert burns used to drink, and theres still a room upstairs where he used to entertain the ladies.

you can still make out a poem written by burns on the window of the room, written using his diamond ring.

tradition states that if you sit in burns chair, you need to buy everyone at the bar a drink…so be warned.

good pub grub too

Ship Inn - Musselburgh

184 North High Street, Musselburgh, Scotland EH21 6BH

18-11-2008

The Sip Inn is a pub of two halves. The bar is pretty much an old man’s pub which is usually busy but not too wild. Through the back there are two sections, one usually housing karaoke and the other section with a pool table and area for dancing during the weekends. This pub is always busy and has a fairly good atmosphere. Leave before closing though as there is almost always fisticuffs!

Cuddie Brae - Musselburgh

91 Newcraighall Road, Musselburgh, Scotland EH21 8RX

18-11-2008

The Cuddie Brae is a chain restaurant/bar attached to a travel lodge/ premier inn type place outside Musselburgh. I realise this sounds like the start of a bad review but don’t let these things put you off - it’s great.

The bar and restaurant always have a lovely intimate feel no matter how busy they are. The food is a good mix between pub grub and a gastro type menu and I always think their specials are impressive. I’ve spent hours here eating a meal and then having coffee and chatting for way too long. We are always made to feel welcome and you never feel hurried out the door. As it is a little out of town there is good parking. Plus it is a stones through from the Kinnaird Park shopping centre so perfect for a feed after shopping. Food is good quality too and reasonably priced.

Fords The Bakers - Musselburgh

41a Eskside West, Musselburgh, Scotland EH21 6PR

18-11-2008

Ford’s the Bakers is a great local bakers. The produce is great, the shops traditional and the staff excellent. This 'branch’ is situated by the River Esk - perfect location to eat your hot pie or cake.

Highlights of childhood include a visit to the Ford’s factory (I went to school with one of the daughters - lovely family). Also a Ford’s special at lunch time - can of juice/soup, pie and a cake for the price of your dinner money.

You;d be hard pushed to find any local baker that does a better job.

Elene Di Rollo - Musselburgh

34 Bridge Street, Musselburgh, Scotland EH21 6AG

18-11-2008

Di Rollo’s is a great ice cream shop in the Fisherrow side of Musselburgh. It also sells beautiful handmade chocs and old schools sweets. Growing up in Musselburgh you always went to Lucas for the traditional vanilla, strawberry and chocolate and Di Rollo’s for the variety of flavors. Elena has exceptionally high standards and is a really lovely lady. Her efforts are obvious as the shop is immaculate and sells products of the highest standards. There is definitely room for two ice cream shops in Musselburgh.

Great place to buy hand made hand wrapped chocolates for gifts.

Whitesands Post Office - Dumfries

73 Whitesands, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway DG1 2RT

18-11-2008

This post office is in the Spar shop at the Whitesands. I have always found it to be very efficient and functional. It can get busy but I guess that is to be expected. Normally I would give this place a higher rating however I sent an expensive item from here a few months back and it never made it out of the Post Office!!!!!!!! Not making any accusations but it has left a bad taste in the mouth.

Jewel In The Crown - Dumfries

48-50 St Michael Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway DG1 2QF

18-11-2008

This used to be a great indian and I have had a few lovely meals here. The decor is kind of retro indian restaurant and I like that. It;s nothing fancy but clean, spacious and the staff are lovely.

Only thing is that the last meal I had there was pretty poor. I’m sad to say this as I have an affection for this place but is has put me off.

bmg1275 Totally aggree,i had a sit in meal and it was like a bad home made one.
