Pantheon - Roma

Piazza della Rotonda, près de la Piazza Navona, 00186 Roma

22-02-2010

The Prince - Kirkcaldy

231 High Street, Kirkcaldy, Scotland KY1 1JF

This indian restaurant/takeaway doesn’t look much from outside and it’s quite cosy once you’re inside. However, this is one of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to. The food is just amazing.

The service is freindly and fast. It is extremely reasonable in price for those of you who are on a budget, however, you wouldn’t know it from the quality of the food. This place really is a hidden jem right in the centre of Kirkcaldy.

I’m feeling hungry just thinking about it. If you like Indian food, you won’t be disappointed with this place. Go, you have to!

Kismet Takeaway - Glenrothes

This place is fantastic!! The best pizza/kebab/burger place in Fife as far as I’m concerned and I’ve tried a few. The calzone pizzas are amazing. The chicken pakora is large, fresh and very tasty and chips and cheese is always a favourite. My son makes me take him there just to get donner meat. I love the chicken kebabs. You get nice pieces of chicken breast with really fresh salad. The spicy sauce dressing that goes with it is a treat for the tastebuds.

If you go in to order food it is cooked in front of you so you can see exactly what’s going on but if you’re phoning for a delivery you have the comfort of knowing that you’re food is being cooked in full view of everyone else!

The food is very reasonably priced but even if it wasn’t I would pay more for this. It’s worth it for the freshness and the taste.

Give it a try sometime, you’ll be hooked.

La Botticella - Roma

Via Di Tor Millina 32, 00186 Roma

23-05-2009 (actualizado el 27-05-2009)

This is the place to be for a great time drinking and having fun in Rome. The owner Giovanni is a true Roman but has the added advantage of having spent a lot of his youth living in Canada so speaks fluent English with a Canadian accent.

This place has excellent wines, liquors and lots of fresh (and I mean fresh)fruit cocktails. Giovanni makes a mean mojito. The bar is cosy but has a good few tables outside to sit and watch the world go by. This place is just off of Piazza Navona so you are right in the centre of the centre.

Giovanni is a great networker and will introduce you to people and help you out with all kinds of insider knowledge. Best places to eat, good holiday spots near to Rome, the best clubs to go to…the list is endless.

Nibbles such as pizza bites (from Giovanni’s sister’s pizza place a few doors up - yum) and monkey nuts are often provided free for customers who drink a lot like me.

This place is so good that it is should come with a warning. Go! I guarantee you’ll have a good time.

Hostel Celica - Ljubljana

Metelkova 8, 1000 Ljubljana

23-05-2009 (actualizado el 27-05-2009)

This is by far the best and most interesting hostel I have ever stayed in. A former prison this has been turned into a hostel and art gallery (they have tours throughout the day so make sure your room is tidy!). You can book a private cell for you and a friend/partner for next to nothing and as well as clean and comfortable digs you get to experience the art and culture of the beautiful capitalcity of Ljubljana (pronounced lube-li-ana).

Better than most hotels I’ve stayed in this place is truly an experience. Good facilities, seperate showers/toilets for men and women. What I loved was the fact that you could share a cell with your partner no problem.

A hippy commune seems to have sprung up at the back and in the evenings you might hear some new age music which in my opinion just adds to the wonderment of the place.

I love the glass floors with scary clay men underneath and the bold bright colours of the outside.

This is a fantastic base to explore the sights and delights this city has to offer. I will definitely go back regardless of how old I get!

Ljubljana is home to the famous architect Joze Plecknik whose amazing constructions can be seen all over the capital city and other European cities (Prague and Vienna). There was an exhibition of his work on in the castle whilst I was there which was truly fascinating.

Great eateries nearby and a good selection of nightlife, whether you’re looking for dancing or something a bit more romantic.

Trinity College Irish Pub - Roma

via del Collegio Romano 6, 00186 Roma

Follow the sign from Via del Corso to find this brilliant late night bar. Hot and sexy bar staff, great music with swinging lights thrown in. Usually a good mixture of tourists and locals. Later on there are bouncers outside vetting entry so if you’re with girls you’re more likely to get in. The other option is to get there before the bouncers start for the night and stay there.

This places gets busy and it’s usually wild and fun.

Food is served during the day and quite late in the evening. Good choice of light dishes, snacks and main meals and reasonably priced. Great to line your stomach for the night ahead.

The toilets are extremely ropey and have been known to run out of toilet paper before the night is up - take some tissues in your handbag just in case.

If you’re looking for a fun night out this is a great place to go.

Pizzeria Da Baffetto - Roma

Via del Governo Vecchio 114, Roma

23-05-2009 (actualizado el 27-05-2009)

This is the best pizza anywhere in the world. Proper, fresh, italian, authetic pizza. The place is tiny and always busy. You can’t book so just turn up and chance your luck. It’s better that way anyway otherwise you would never get in!!

This is on my favourite street in the whole of Rome - Via del governor vecchio. So after you’ve had something to eat you are slap bang in the middle of all the action.

Great selection of fresh toppings, fast and friendly service and exquisite pizza. Very reasonably priced given that it’s the best pizza in the world (in my humble opinion).

Passionstheater Oberammergau - Oberammergau

Theaterstr. 16, 82487 Oberammergau

24-05-2009 (actualizado el 27-05-2009)

How to explain this? Hmmm. Ok this is a play about the life and death of Jesus Christ. The inhabitants of Oberammergau have performed this play once every 10 years since 1634.

The play is performed repeatedly over 5 months during the first year of each decade. The last play was in 2000 and the next will be from May to October 2010.

The origin of the play is that the town vowed that if God spared them from the bubonic plague which was ravaging the region in the 1630s they would perform the play every ten years. The death toll subsided after they held the first play and the tradition has continued ever since.

This is a dramatic play with music involving hunderds of actors, performed on an outside stage (seating areas are covered) in German which last 7 hours.

I went to see the Passion Play in 1990 and I am not affiliated to any religion (although it is certainly a catholic enterprise). It was a wonderful experience and one which I remember vividly even 19 years later. The town of Oberammergau itself is absolutely stunning like something out of a children’s fairytale.

You can buy the translated text of the play in pretty much any language to follow what’s being said or sung on stage. However, the play is so dramatic and powerful that you don’t really need it to know what’s happening.

People come from all over the world to watch the Passion Play and the fact that it takes place only every 10 years makes it that little bit more special.

Definitely something I would recommend for a once in a lifetime experience.

Da Augusto - Trastevere

piazza de' renzi 15, Roma

24-05-2009 (actualizado el 27-05-2009)

This is proper down to earth Italian food. No nonsense. The menu is whatever is fresh and available and it’s open until it’s all gone.

There aren’t really any opening times. You just turn up and if it’s open and there’s a space then you eat. It may seem a bit strange but that just adds to the allure in my opinion.

There a paper tablecloths that are replaced quickly for the next customer. The service is fast and friendly (albeit a bit robust). The food is amazing and very cheap. There are no airs and graces with this place so don’t go if you’re looking to be pampered.

There are no fancy wine lists it’s house wine red or white, bread and water.

This has to be some of the best italian food I have ever tasted. Have a walk round trastevere and if it’s open and you’re hungry head in and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the fresh italian dishes cooked the way they should be.
