Sinnfull - Cape Town

The Promenade, Camps Bay, Cape Town

04-05-2008

Camps Bay, the place in South Africa that resembles Mote Carlo is the perfect place for those who want to rub shoulders with the rich and the famous.

Abounding with luxury cars and beautiful people it also houses a one-of-a-kind Ice-Cream house, namely Sinnfull. Sinnfull has some of the weirdest and most wonderful Ice-Cream flavours and puts new meaning to Gourmet Ice-Cream. All the ice-Cream is made on site so quality and freshness is guarenteed. recommended flavour is Heavenly Hash, a rich combination of marshmallow, chocolate chips, and fudge blended in a velvety Vanilla ice-cream. It is oh-so-tempting and gorgeously naughty for those of us wanting for those wanting to keep the calories down.

Tin Roof - Cape Town

Main Road, Claremont, Cape Town

04-05-2008

From the outside Tin Roof might not be much but trust me this place is an institution for locals, myself included.

It is a club without all the frills and fuss more than frequented by the local student population and even the odd celebrity. It is perfect for those party animals who want an awesome night out where dancing the night away and partying hard is the order and from Monday through to Saturday the place is absolutely jam-packed until the wee-hours of the morning.

Having no entrance cost, and cheap drinks it has provoked the local saying, “All roads lead to ‘The Roof’”, and truly from experience, all roads really DO lead to ‘The Roof’. One of the prime party locations around the Cape.

Coimbra Bakery - Cape Town

Main Road, Claremont, Cape Town

04-05-2008

C’mon, we all know we are suckers for any form of sweet delights. Somewhere deep inside all of us is that childish excitement that makes our mouth water with delight when that nagging sweet tooth rears its head. And after sampling many various hubs of deliciousness in and around Cape Town, Coimbra Bakery is certainly one of the many must-sample bakeries.

Specialising in a variety of traditional Portuguese bakery delights, the Portuguese Luiz family who own the bakery certainly know who entice the senses. You know you are in for a treat when you walk into the bakery with its enticing smell and beautifully arranged, freshly baked decadent treats lining the shelves.

The Coimbra Bakery has two branches in close proximity, one in Lansdowne Road and one in Main Road, Claremont. The easiest would be to take a premium-fare taxi to take you to Main Road, Claremont but be warned that they are likely to charge tourists exorbitant rates. However if on a budget I would recommend a trip in one of the local taxi’s for a incredibly cheap rate and you would need no help in finding them as they leave from the city’s CBD belting out “Mowbray Wynberg!”. Hop in to the one shouting that and you are on your way but be sure to ask exactly where they are heading as you might find yourself in a very different place to where you intended.

The Company Gardens - Cape Town

cnr Adderley and Wale St, 8001 Cape Town

04-05-2008

Occasionally I like to take a break from my hectic schedule and just watch the world pass by. I can think of no better place to do this then the Company Gardens in the heart of Cape Town.

Surrounded by a canopy of oak trees and abounding with wildlife it seems odd that in the middle of such a cosmopolitan city, one can find a place of such natural beauty but indeed it encompasses what Cape Town is about and what makes it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

On a lazy Sunday afternoon one can watch as numerous bridal couples take advantage of the blissful surroundings to add a touch of class to their extra special day. For those tourists wanting to sample a taste of the sites of Cape Town, the garden is also home to the Parliament buildings, the South African Museum and Planetarium and the regal St. George’s Cathedral. It is also easily accesible within walking distance of the city’s hub which is Long Street.

A must see for anyone visiting Cape Town.

Borruso's - Cape Town

Cnr Main Rd and Mains Avenue, Kenilworth, Cape Town

08-04-2008

Tucked away in a little unassuming corner in one of Cape Town’s leafy, upper-class suburbs is the little Borruso’s pizzeria. Quite simply put by many of it’s faithful, “The best pizza in Cape Town.” And sampling some of their pizza it seems likely that they can definitely claim this honour. Borruso’s is a rustic restaurant in tree canopied surroundings with no flash advertisements or neon lights, so much so that one often has to be told about it rather than stumbling upon it on one’s own. It feels as if you are stepping into a little part of Italy within the confines of the great Mother City as the atmosphere and fierce Italian passion is tangible in the air along with the enticing and delectable garlic and herb aromas. All in all, exceptionally professional service, reasonable pricing and an incredible vibe make Borruso’s worth every penny.

Limnos Bakery - Cape Town

Canal Walk, Cape Town

08-04-2008

Limnos is a traditional French patisserie/boulangerie in Cape Town producing some of the finest French confectionary delights in South Africa. The Limnos name has been in existence since 1975 when it started out as a single bakery in the industrial Kuils River region. Today it is fast growing into a exceptionally popular producer of pastries, cakes and other confectionary in the Cape Town area. With many branches open in and around Cape Town, Limnos is fast becoming a household name famed for their exceptional quality and mouthwatering presentation. It is one of the many rejuvenated food hotspots that is helping to stake the claim that Cape Town is undoubtedly the food capital of South Africa.

Charly's Bakery - Cape Town

Canterbury Street 38, 8001 Cape Town

03-04-2008

Nestled in the East Side of the Cape Town CBD, an area very rarely frequented by tourists, is a little bakery called Charly’s. Although specialising in chocolate wedding cakes, Charly’s produce cakes for almost any and every occasion. They also produce many other sweet treats that will satisfy even the most hungry sweet tooth. Most of their produce is made in the tradition of the German Master Baker, producing muffins, brownies, pastries and pies of an exceptional quality. Combine that with the energy and enthusiasm of the Charly’s team and you have the makings of a bakery that puts all others in the shadows. Recommendations? There are none because everything is so utterly divine and decadent it would be silly of me to choose a favourite.

Vida e Caffe - Cape Town

Kloof Street, Cape Town

03-04-2008

South Africa’s answer to Starbucks! Vida e Caffe has fast become a Cape Town landmark and a trendy hotspot. From its humble beginnings in Kloof Street to arguably the biggest espresso bar franchise in South Africa, their secret has and still is their ability to combine modern, trendy designs with a glorious cuppa! A visit to one of their many stores is eye-candy in itself with clean lines and European inspired designs clearly evident while the enticing smell of roasted coffee beans and the soothing sounds of Spanish jazz serenade you. Each order is accompanied by a delectable Lindt chocolate morsel that seems to compliment the gorgeous brew perfectly.

The coffee itself is an Arabica blend known as “Estrela Blend” and is a sweet coffee bean with a pleasant taste, different to that of most major coffee houses who opt for the traditional French roast, a far more bitter brew and an acquired taste.

The inspiration behind Vida is traditional Lisbon street cafe fare such as a large variety of Portuguese pastries. I highly recommend their Double Latte for coffee lovers but for those of you who with a sweet tooth it would be a sin to not try Vida’s “Chocolat Quente”, an absolutely heavenly hot chocolate drink.
