Jones Dairy Cafe - Shoreditch

What a great little place, it’s like being in your own cosy kitchen. Mind you, I went on a Friday when it was dead quiet and even then the service seemed a little slow. It looks like it might get overwhelming when the market’s on.

Today I had two poached eggs with toast. Only one turned up at first, with an apology, the other one hadn’t cooked through evenly so they were busy with another. I’m quite happy with that.

My friend had bread with sausage. They’ve got a lot of fare like that. All good, reasonable prices.

I’ll definitely be back and will try out the delicious looking cakes too.

G&T Organic Shop And Coffee House - Shoreditch

Can this area sustain yet another organic shop / hipster coffee type place? I may have rolled my eyes a bit when this tiny shop tucked next to the pharmacy opened its doors a couple of weeks ago. But the answer is a resounding yes!

G&T sold out of their delicious sandwiches on their first day, before they even had their sign up. I’ve returned several times since for the best organic apple juice I’ve ever tasted.

The staff are lovely and (unsurprisingly) knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their products.

It’s not cheap, but then organic generally isn’t. However, the quality means you need less quantity.

Also, there’s a 5p discount for those who choose soy milk in their coffee because they want to try to convert people to it. Nice touch.

Nia Cafe Bar - Brighton

This comfortably furnished café turned out to be an excellent choice after a tiring and stressful day. The staff are so competent and so lovely!

Despite there being more interesting options on the menu, I was in the mood for fish 'n' chips, which were really nice.

There was a bit of a thing with my companion's food, so they gave us some free drinks and knocked something off the bill. They were very keen to make sure we were happy with the solution.

The George - Brighton

The George came highly recommended by a friend who'd lived in Brighton and we'd looked forward to going. But I guess times have changed or the staff had gotten out on the wrong side of bed that morning. So despite the tempting menu, we went and had dinner elsewhere.

Café Rouge - Tottenham Court Road - Westminster

Café Rouge is a very decent chain of caffs and this one, which opened six months ago, is no different. Perfectly good French inspired food, reasonable prices and very nice staff. I've sent various friends and family there and they've all reported back happy.

Adding to the French café atmosphere is that it seemed very child friendly. I didn't go in with a child myself, but it is something I like to see.

Spitalfields Crypt Trust Charity Shop - Bethnal Green

385 Bethnal Green Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 0AN

22-03-2010

This charity shop opened only two weeks ago and is a welcome addition to Bethnal Green Road. Its bright and open interior makes for easy and pleasant browsing among the usual charity offerings of secondhand clothes, books and bric-a-brac.

The money raised goes to rehabilitation and training of people having problems with homelessness, addiction, poverty and isolation. The Spitalfields Crypt Trust apparently has other shops in the area, which I wouldn't mind visiting, having seen this one.

Sagar - Hammersmith

157 King Street, Hammersmith, London W6 9JT

For me, this is a great place to get a fast dinner before shooting off to my next destination. The dhosas are quite tasty, the service quick and friendly, and the surroundings are pleasantly subdued.

I was really happy to find somewhere that does decent South Indian food and I look forward to coming more often.

The Noodles & Magic - Hammersmith

139A King Street, Hammersmith, London W6 9JG

25-02-2010

This Thai restaurant is fairly plain in appearance, enough that the evening candlelight isn't enough to give it actual atmosphere. There's enough veggie options to suit me and the quality is perfectly adequate for the price, perhaps a smidge on the bland side but that's better than having all my veg swimming in soy sauce.

Does dinners but is more of a busy lunchtime place. The staff are unfailingly friendly. Am happy to return.

Old Ship Inn - Hammersmith

25 Upper Mall, Hammersmith, London W6 9TD

This is a lovely and roomy pub in a great location on the Thames. Even on a grey day, it's good to be there. Nice atmosphere and attentive staff, but found the food to be not that special.

The Regent - Islington

201-203 Liverpool Road, Islington, London N1 1LX

Lovely atmosphere, I felt right at home. The pizzas are fantastic and I have yet to hear a complaint about the other offerings on their menu.

Those nursing a hangover on a Sunday morning can hide from the sun in the comfy basement. Not looking at anyone in particular...
